January 8, 2025
January is the traditional time of year to take stock, make resolutions, and volunteer. If you're passionate about protecting our local habitats but are short on time, then here are some quick ways to get involved that make a big impact!
1. Become a citizen scientist! Take part in national wildlife surveys while on woodland walks or from your own home, recording your findings on apps and websites that will help scientists quickly gather data over a wide area. See the opportunities on our webpage and pick one that peaks your interest! (Time required: five minutes).
2. Pass it on! Follow us on Instagram or Facebook and share our posts to spread the word about the project in your local community - who knows who you'll inspire! Time required: 30 seconds.)
3. Spotted an old tree? Do you have an old tree in your garden or on your land, or do you know of one in your community? Tell us about a tree and one of our volunteers will take a look to see if it could be mapped and recorded as part of our ancient tree survey (time required: two minutes).
4. Tell us about your ideas to help more people to access and enjoy woodlands. Perhaps you’re part of a community group or you’re a volunteer - we’d love to hear from you and help put your ideas into action (time required: five minutes).
5. Litter pick in your local woods next time you visit! Remember some gardening gloves, a bin bag, and not to pick up any items that could be a hazard for your health - report those items the local council or landowner instead (time required: however long you choose).
To stay up to date with more ways to get involved, including volunteer opportunities and upcoming events - then sign up to our e-newsletter. For those of you with more free time, we'll be sharing new volunteer opportunities very soon!
And a Happy New Year from all of us in the Lost Woods team.
The Lost Woods project is made possible thanks to The National Lottery Heritage Fund.
